The future is bright for machining.  Pennsylvania businesses are investing in skills training to help fill open jobs and maintain a strong, local machining workforce.

The manufacturing skills gap is a national problem.  A 2015 Deloitte study predicts that nearly 3.5 million manufacturing jobs will open by 2025, and 2 million of these jobs will go unfilled because of skilled worker shortages.  

A recent survey of NTMA members showed that 75% have existing job openings and over 90% have serious or moderate challenges recruiting skilled employees.

 

DID YOU KNOW?

ONE in every FOUR jobs in Crawford County is in manufacturing.  The northwest Pennsylvania region has a very high percentage of jobs in manufacturing making up 25% total employment in Crawford County and 16% in Erie County.  Nationally, this manufacturing jobs make up 11% of total employment.

Manufacturing companies have hiring needs beyond machinists.  Many of the openings in tool & machine companies are in positions such as quality, engineering, design, accounting, sales and management. 

wHat are pathways to START a career in manufacturing? 

  • HIGH SCHOOL
    • Career and Technical Centers - Students have the opportunity to attend a career and technical center to learn precision machining, drafting and design, electronics technology, or welding. Click here to find a career and technical center near you. 
    • Technical Education - Our region also offers strong technical education programs in public high schools with hands-on classes that provide basic skills which compliment tooling and machining.

  • POST-SECONDARY EDUCATION
    There are technical programs specific to tooling and machining careers at many post-secondary schools in the region.  Partners of the Northwestern PA Chapter NTMA include:

    Many people enter the tooling and machining workforce with no prior experience.  Employers are willing to offer on-the-job training to individuals who have good attendance, work ethic, and the desire to learn.
